Who Can Apply
If you have a thirst for exploration and want to do
something worthwhile for between 4 and 12 weeks then YOU can apply to BSES
Expeditions.
We have a range of volunteer opportunities for anyone from
the age of 16 upwards from becoming a Young Explorer up to being a Chief
Leader. Take a look at the options below.
Young Explorers
(16-20 years)
If you are looking for a challenging and stimulating adventure of a life time which
will fit into the summer holidaysÉthen we want to hear from you!
All training is provided so there is no need to have
previous mountaineering or fieldwork experience, what we are looking for is
young people with enthusiasm, determination, common sense, the ability to work
as a member of a team, basic physical fitness and a good sense of humour. Any successful expedition must have a wide cross-section of
abilities among its participants, there will be opportunities for you whether
you are academic, artistic or adventurous.
The financial cost shouldn't put you off as we provide fundraising mentors to help you raise the money yourselves and enjoy this part of the challenge.

Gap Year Young Explorers
(18-23 years)
Do you have a few months to fill with a once in a life time
adventure?
We are looking for is young people with enthusiasm,
determination, common sense, the ability to work as a member of a team, basic
physical fitness and a good sense of humour.
These expeditions take place in
particularly extreme environments or at more challenging times of the year so
some outdoors experience would be useful.
Leader Trainees -
Leadership Training Programme (18 -23 years)
Are you keen to develop yourself as a Leader of the future, then this is your
chance!
If you have been a YE with BSES Expeditions before or have some
experience of expeditions through other organisations and would like to gain valuable leadership
development training in the field under the direction and guidance of our
experienced BSES leader team then join us as a Leader Trainee. You could gain a
nationally recognized qualification in leadership and spend a summer learning
new skills in the Arctic.
Assistant Leaders (21
years and over) If you have some experience of working with young people and have been on
expeditions in the past then this is a great opportunity to build on your
experiences though hands on leading in the field. Working alongside a more
experienced leader you will join and help to lead a group of young explorers on
a summer expedition.
You should have lots of enthusiasm, energy, eagerness to
learn and a range of skills to bring to your group, although no formal
qualifications are required.
Leaders (25 years and over)
We are looking for people who can confidently lead and
inspire our young explorers in the field. All our leaders are volunteers and
you will need plenty of energy and enthusiasm and your own lust for adventure.
We offer a range of leader roles from 'Science Leader' and 'Adventure/Mountain
Leader' to Base Camp Managers and Expedition Doctor roles.

Chief Leaders (25
years and over)
Whilst this is a voluntary post, it involves hard work, commitment and time and
as such Chief Leaders are awarded a £2,000 honorarium as way of thanks for
their contribution.
As Chief Leader you will be required to work closely with
the BSES Office staff to plan the execution of your expedition. The task will
involve a recce to the expedition area to establish contacts and to research
objectives for the expedition. You will then be required to work with the
Expeditions Officer to select a leader team and plan the expedition logistics,
adventure and scientific projects. Each expedition could have up to 72 Young
Explorers between the ages of 16-20 as well as a leader team of up to 20
adults.
To be considered for this position you are likely to have:
- Experience of leading and managing teams.
- Experience with Young People.
- A scientific/mountaineering or expedition background.
- Considerable free time to devote to the planning of the
expedition.
- Familiarity with computer packages such as Word and Excel
- Access to email.
- An ability to organise efficiently and effectively
