ABOUT LEADING WITH BSES

Leading with BSES requires a strong volunteer ethos, commitment to our joint aims of youth development, wilderness adventure and purposeful scientific research. All our leader positions are voluntary.

We believe that this creates a special atmosphere on our expeditions as all the leaders are like minded and have selflessly given up their free time and are committed to providing a positive and lasting experience for the young people on our expeditions.

LEADER ROLES

The expedition leader teams are made up as follows - (please click on the bold underlined text to see amore detailed summary of the role)

Chief Leader - in overall charge of the expedition planning and all activities when in the field.

Chief Scientist - planning and co-ordinating the delivery of the expedition science projects

Chief Adventure Leader - in overall charge of safety, all the adventure activities and also the training required to do these safely.

Expedition Medics - each expedition has one or two dedicated qualified Medics to ensure that medical issues can be safely handled in the field

Expedition Fire Leaders - typically expeditions are broken down into groups of up to 12 Young Explorers (YEs) who stay together when in the field. Each fire (so called because of the camp fire group) has two leaders.

- an Adventure leader who is responsible for leading the adventurous side of activities.

- a Science Leader who runs the scientific activity of the group.

Base Camp Manager - responsible for maintaining a base camp, provisions and equipment.

Pastoral Care - a leader may also be appointed to ensure that YEs are supported, comfortable and secure in the expedition environment.

Assistant Leaders - are generally younger leaders with experience of expeditions who fulfil a general assistant role as part of their own development as future expedition leaders. Typically there is one with each fire.
