What’s involved?
From sea-kayaking at the base of magnificent, steep-sided fjords to climbing stunning snow-capped mountains, you will experience a world few people will ever see. You will depart from town of Alta in the North of Norway and exploring the islands around the Loppa peninsula over one month.
Living out in the remote Arctic wilderness, you will discover the joys of living minimally, the thrill of sleeping under the night sky and the beauty of wild camps on secluded shores as you explore this fascinating region.
The month-long expedition will begin with a few days at base camp as you adjust to the wilderness environment and prepare for the adventure ahead. You will be divided into small groups called Fires which will rotate between sea-kayaking and land-based adventure. Previous kayaking experience is not required and all training will be provided to get you fully prepared for the expedition.
Science & Fieldwork
Each fire group will focus on a different area of scientific or geographical work. You do not need to be studying these topics as we aim to raise general awareness and interest in key issues such as environmental impact of humans, climate change and conservation. Past science and fieldwork has included physiology, glaciology, zoology, ecology and surveying, geology, birdlife, flora and fauna and anthropology - the study of local indigenous communities.
Adventure
Sea-kayaking will be the main form of adventure of this expedition. For those looking to learn to kayak there’s no place more spectacular. For those keen to improve their survival skills there’s no place better than the Arctic! In addition to the sea-kayaking adventures, you will also have the opportunity to explore the magnificent glaciers and mountains on foot. Whilst on land you will learn essential mountaineering techniques such as traversing ridge lines, river crossing techniques and rescue procedures, navigation and mountain safety. All leaders are fully trained and experienced in working in this environment
