Who is it for?

Anyone aged 18-23 who is serious about becoming a leader in their career and/or on expeditions and has some previous expedition experience.

What's it all about?

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop and practise leadership skills on an expedition, with the support of experienced wilderness leaders and management trainers. A key component is the link between expedition skills and leadership skills. The programme will combine practical examples from business management, leading in the outdoors and leadership training models. This will provide you with a solid grounding in leadership theory, with the chance to practice the soft and hard skills of leadership. The programme is delivered over six months through three pre-expedition weekends and a four week expedition. All the training is extremely practical, giving you the opportunity to take real responsibility for making the expedition successful.

What can I get out of it?

Employment reaearch confirms that top employers place a very high value on these experiences and qualifications. This programme will boost your skills, CV and prospects. You will develop key competencies and knowledge which will prepare you well for any leadership role or challenge in your future.

Chris Wane, Leadership Trainee

"In today's work environment, employers are just looking for more than just a degree. They are looking for the proven ability to work as part of a team, and also the potential to lead it.

If going on expeditions is a step towards achieving these skills, then the BSES Leadership Development Expedition is a giant leap. You are constantly exposed to situations which require leadership, with a leader team who want to support you through the process of leadership, rather than do it themselves.I know of no other programme in which you can learn and apply these skills in such a challenging, majestic environment."
